Double Balloon Enteroscopy is an advanced endoscopic technique that allows specialists to examine the small intestine, which is otherwise inaccessible using traditional endoscopy. This modern procedure is primarily used to investigate unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding and can both identify and treat the source of such bleeding.

Minister Abela explained that this investment will not only reduce the need for complex surgical procedures but also improve the quality of life for Maltese and Gozitan patients without the need to travel abroad. He also highlighted that DBE is crucial in diagnosing and managing small bowel conditions such as Crohn’s Disease, tumours, and coeliac-related complications.

“Not only is this a major step forward for healthcare services in our country, but it is also a significant milestone in our commitment to the individual. I look forward to further developments made possible through the strong economy of our nation,” Abela said.

Professor Edward Despott added that the new equipment will benefit patients with conditions affecting both the small and large intestines. “We are pleased that this investment will now commence at Mater Dei and will play an important role in the care provided to Maltese patients,” he stated.
