New Digital Dizzjunarju.mt Launches To Make Maltese Access Easier

Got questions about something related to Maltese?
Developed by academics Michael Spagnol and Dwayne Ellul, with artistic direction by Julian Mallia and a dedicated team of researchers, Dizzjunarju.mt is a new national digital dictionary that aims to modernise access to the Maltese language and make authoritative linguistic resources available to everyone.
The platform, created by the Department of Maltese at the University of Malta, is designed to serve as a comprehensive online reference for Maltese, bringing together decades of academic research and adapting it for contemporary use on digital devices.
It builds on established lexicographical foundations while continuously updating its content to reflect how the language is used today.
The growing database already allows users to search a wide range of entries, with further additions being made on an ongoing basis.
Each entry provides detailed linguistic information, including pronunciation guidance, clear definitions in Maltese alongside English equivalents, grammatical classification, plural forms, word roots and etymological notes.
Where applicable, it also explains multiple meanings, helping users understand how context influences interpretation.
The dictionary goes beyond simple definitions by including real-life usage examples, idiomatic expressions and culturally rooted phrases that reflect everyday speech.
It also preserves traditional sayings and colloquial expressions that have been passed down through generations, ensuring that linguistic heritage is not lost.
Search tools allow users to look up words in both Maltese and English, with partial phrase recognition and cross-referencing between related entries. Future updates will include features such as a highlighted word of the week to promote engagement and language learning.
