The Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) has launched a new children’s book, Kannella, aimed at supporting children living in alternative care while raising awareness about their experiences.

Written by Angie Farrugia Ellul, Head of the Directorate for Alternative Care, the book follows the journey of Kannella as she navigates loss, change, and healing. Through its story, the book seeks to help children better understand difficult emotions while highlighting the importance of empathy, support, and a sense of belonging.

The launch was attended by Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights Michael Falzon, who reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring that every child is given equal opportunities, regardless of their circumstances. He praised the Directorate for Alternative Care for the initiative and announced that all proceeds from the book will be donated to children currently living in Alternative Care residential homes.

During the event, speakers emphasised that childhood is one of the most important stages of life, shaping an individual's future development. While children placed in alternative care are provided with a safe and nurturing environment when they are unable to remain with their biological families, many continue to experience uncertainty, grief, and questions about their future.

Farrugia Ellul explained that Kannella is designed as both a heartwarming and therapeutic story, exploring childhood trauma, loss, and the healing power of empathy and belonging. Intended for children aged seven and above, the book also serves as a valuable resource for parents, guardians, and caregivers to help young readers understand and process their emotions while finding hope after loss.
