The Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) and the University of Malta have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening collaboration between the two institutions in areas including research, policy development, training, innovation and social dialogue.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti and Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri.

Through the agreement, the two institutions will collaborate on several initiatives, including the use of University of Malta facilities, particularly the Valletta Campus, research and consultancy services, participation of University representatives in MCESD meetings, annual strategic discussions on research, knowledge sharing, training and capacity building.

The agreement will also create opportunities for students through placements, internships and academic projects linked to social dialogue and national development.

Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti said the agreement represents another step towards strengthening social dialogue through greater access to knowledge and evidence-based research. He said discussions within MCESD should continue to be supported by high-quality research and analysis to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing Malta.

Minister Byron Camilleri said the agreement will help bring the University of Malta closer to the country’s realities, ensuring that academic knowledge and research can contribute to policy development and society. He added that the partnership will provide students with opportunities to gain practical experience beyond the classroom.

University of Malta Rector Professor Frank Bezzina said the partnership will allow the University to place its knowledge at the service of the wider community and contribute academic expertise to discussions on economic and social issues.

The Memorandum of Understanding will remain in force for three years and will support further seminars, workshops and collaborative initiatives between the two institutions.
