The Active Ageing Centre in Rabat has been officially inaugurated, marking a significant addition to Malta’s network of centres dedicated to older adults. The centre provides a safe and welcoming space where seniors can take part in educational, social, and cultural activities, all with the aim of remaining active and engaged within their communities.

This new centre is the 36th of its kind, with attendance across all centres reaching 3,258 older adults over the past year. This represents an increase of over 20% compared to the previous year, reflecting the growing interest among seniors in programmes that promote wellbeing and social participation.

The centre’s activities have been designed to support lifelong learning, enhance knowledge of physical and mental health, and strengthen social connections.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea emphasised that Active Ageing Centres are a key part of the Government’s strategy to help older adults maintain independence while remaining fully integrated in their communities. He highlighted the Government’s commitment to expanding the network of centres and modernising existing facilities where required.

Permanent Secretary for Health and Active Ageing Renzo DeGabriele praised the initiative, stating that the opening of the 36th centre provides further encouragement to broaden these services. Chief Executive for Active Ageing and Community Care Steve Agius underlined the collaboration between partners, particularly within the Rabat community, which has allowed the centre to become a reference point for older adults. He added that a central goal of the activities is to reduce loneliness and promote social inclusion.

The Active Ageing Centre in Rabat will be open every Tuesday and Thursday, offering a regular opportunity for seniors to connect and participate in community life.
