Nearly 800 Weekly Interventions By Cleaning & Maintenance Division During Summer

During the summer months, the Cleaning and Maintenance Division carried out nearly 800 scheduled interventions every week across Malta, covering roads, public spaces and coastal areas in dozens of localities. The work will continue throughout autumn to ensure these areas remain clean, well maintained and accessible for both residents and visitors.

On the final day of summer, Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli visited Division workers and praised the extensive work completed during the busy season.

The Division operated 112 cleaning routes for roads and public spaces, resulting in 588 scheduled interventions each week. A further 32 routes focused on beaches and coastal areas, adding another 209 weekly interventions. Altogether, the Division carried out up to 797 scheduled interventions every week across urban and coastal locations.

Minister Zerafa Civelli said the effort reflects the Government's commitment to maintaining clean communities and delivering high quality public services throughout the year. She added that investment in modern resources and technology will continue so the Division can maintain high standards of cleanliness for Maltese and Gozitan families.

Director General Jude Zammit explained that the Division's responsibilities extend far beyond street sweeping. Teams carried out manual and mechanised road cleaning, collected waste and refuse bags, maintained public bins, removed illegally dumped waste, cleaned public spaces and carried out washing, deep cleaning and post-event operations.

Along Malta's coastline, workers cleaned the foreshore, emptied bins, collected litter and carried out mechanised beach cleaning where required. During the busiest weeks of summer, the coastal programme alone accounted for around 3,744 working hours each week across eight coastal zones.

The Division relied on a fleet of 204 specialised vehicles and assets, including road sweepers, waste collection vehicles, road washers, tippers and specialised beach machinery. Manual work remained essential in areas inaccessible to machinery. Operations will continue in the coming months, with services adapted to seasonal needs through planned routes, greater use of mechanised equipment and improved coordination of resources.
