Nearly 6,000 New Vehicles Registered In Malta In First Five Months Of 2026

Almost 6,000 new vehicles were registered in Malta during the first five months of 2026, according to figures tabled in Parliament.
MP Anthony Agius Decelis asked Sustainable Mobility Minister Chris Bonett how many new vehicles had been registered throughout 2023, 2024, 2025 and the first five months of this year.
The figures provided were:
2023: 14,674 new vehicles
2024: 13,175
2025: 12,976
January–May 2026: 5,942
The annual figures show a gradual drop in new vehicle registrations between 2023 and 2025, falling by around 12% over the two-year period.
However, with close to 6,000 new vehicles already registered by the end of May this year, Malta’s vehicle fleet continues to grow as traffic and congestion remain a major part of everyday commuting.
In a separate parliamentary question, it was also revealed that more than 30,000 people hold a full Category A motorcycle licence, as motorcycles continue to be seen by some commuters as a more practical way of navigating Malta’s traffic.
Do you think Malta has too many cars on the road?
