Nearly 50 Hospitalised After Suspected Food Poisoning at Work Event

Around 50 individuals were admitted to Mater Dei Hospital on Thursday evening after falling ill during a workplace event held in St Julian’s, with early indications suggesting a possible case of food poisoning.
The group is believed to have become unwell after consuming food served at the same function, which was attended by employees participating in the event. Emergency services transported the affected persons to hospital, with several ambulances dispatched to the scene, including the Portomaso area.
Most of those taken to hospital were reported to be in a stable condition, although four individuals are expected to remain under observation overnight as a precaution. The remainder are not thought to be seriously affected.
The sudden influx of patients resulted in increased pressure on Mater Dei’s Emergency Department, as medical staff managed the large number of admissions within a short period of time.
Following the incident, the Food Safety Authority confirmed that it immediately initiated an investigation after being alerted by the Superintendent of Public Health regarding the hospitalisations. Officials stated that checks at the food establishment involved began without delay.
Authorities are now working to determine the source of the illness and whether the food provided at the event was the cause. The investigation is ongoing.
