During a press conference, PN leader Alex Borg, alongside candidates Mark Anthony Sammut and Jonathan Muscat, explained how a Nationalist government would reduce electricity bills by an average of 30%. The proposal first gained attention during the party’s rally in Birgu and has since become a central point in its campaign.

Borg stated that the plan is built on automatic and transparent reductions, ensuring that lower costs are clearly reflected in the bills of Maltese and Gozitan families. He described the proposal as a direct response to rising living expenses and said it aims to provide tangible relief. He also noted that the measures take into account individuals living alone, as well as voluntary organisations, farmers and herders.

Sammut outlined the main measures, including the removal of the annual meter rent for 228,000 households at a cost of €17 million. He also detailed the removal of the second residential tariff band, reducing rates for the 0 to 6000 kWh range, benefiting the same number of households at a cost of €8 million.

Further measures include extending the eco reduction threshold to 51,000 individuals living alone and introducing direct reductions for consumers. Farmers, herders and voluntary organisations would also benefit from lower costs.

Sammut said the measures would cost €30 million annually and added that a €60 million investment in solar panels on government properties would generate 175GWh of energy.

Muscat emphasised the need for transparency in energy contracts and accountable leadership within key entities.
