Nationalist Party Reacts To 2026 Budget: “Money Is Handed Out, Debt Explodes, And Problems Remain”

The Nationalist Party has criticised the 2026 Budget, warning that while money is being distributed, debt is soaring and the real problems facing Maltese families remain unaddressed.
The party highlighted a new record of national debt, which is projected to triple to €14 billion under Prime Minister Robert Abela. Citizens will receive only a modest increase of €4.66, on which tax still applies, while Ministers are set to gain €1,700 each. Traffic congestion will continue, as the Finance Minister’s approach to mass transport fails to deliver, and long waits at hospitals and out-of-pocket expenses for medicines remain unchanged. Capital expenditure has been cut by €100 million, while infrastructure continues to deteriorate due to unplanned population growth.
Citizens will see just €4.66 in their pocket, on which they still have to pay tax, while Ministers benefit from an increase of €1,700 each. National debt is set to triple to €14 billion, with nearly €1 million in interest to be paid every single day.
Traffic congestion continues with no solution in sight, as no mass transport plan has been announced. Infrastructure continues to collapse, with capital expenditure cut by €100 million. Hospitals remain overcrowded, and medicines still need to be purchased out of pocket. Young people struggle to buy their first home, new schools are absent, and there is a continuing lack of Learning Support Educators in existing schools.
Above all, no plan has been presented to address Malta’s rapidly growing population.
The Nationalist party added, while this Budget distributes money, it fails to tackle the underlying issues, leaves debt exploding, and does nothing to resolve the problems Maltese and Gozitan families face every day.
