Nationalist Party Calls For Reopening Of Animal Hospital

On World Animal Day, the Partit Nazzjonalista has renewed its commitment to being “the voice of animals and of all those who care about them,” while strongly appealing for the reopening of Malta’s only animal hospital, which has now been shut for more than 26 months.

The PN recalled that it was under a Nationalist Government that the Directorate for Animal Welfare was established, alongside the introduction of strict enforcement against animal abuse.

The same government also opened the San Franġisk Centre which is the country’s first and only animal hospital. It provided round-the-clock medical care for animals in need.

“Regrettably, this hospital has now been closed for over 26 months, clear proof of how little Robert Abela’s Government cares about the health of our animals,” said the Nationalist Party.

The party stressed that the closure has left many pet owners helpless during emergencies, with families tragically losing pets because no other clinics were open during the hours the hospital once operated.

Despite repeated calls, Government has failed to give any clarity on when the hospital will reopen or offer alternative solutions in the meantime, according to PN.

Janice Abela Chetcuti, Shadow Minister for Animal Welfare,  insisted that only a Nationalist Government will restore and expand this vital service: “A new Nationalist Government is committed not only to reopening the Animal Hospital, but also to strengthening the services it offers.”

Plans include greater support for those who care for abandoned animals, stronger protections for farm animals, and new safeguards for exotic species.

The PN also pledged stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws to ensure real and lasting protection.

“The Partit Nazzjonalista will remain the true voice of animals and of those who care for them,” the statement concluded.
