National Strategy Launched as Malta Leads in Dementia-Related Deaths

Malta has launched its National Dementia Strategy, spanning from 2024 to 2031. Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela recently announced this initiative aimed at tackling one of the most pressing health challenges facing the Maltese population.
The strategy is set to focus on minimising the risk of dementia among individuals, a timely response given the concerning statistics released by Eurostat in October 2023, which highlighted Malta as having the highest dementia death rate in Europe, with 80.1 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.
This national campaign is not only about reducing the incidence of dementia but also about enhancing the quality of life for those living with the condition. It encompasses a holistic approach to care, ensuring that individuals with dementia, as well as their families and caregivers, receive the support and resources they need. Key components of the strategy include targeted training and preparation for those living with and caring for individuals with dementia, aiming to foster a more informed, compassionate, and effective care environment.
By focusing on improving the holistic care system, the Maltese government will attempt to address dementia from multiple angles, ensuring that prevention, care, and support are interwoven into the fabric of national health policies.
