Malta’s first-ever female Government Whip, Naomi Cachia, has bid farewell from her role following Prime Minister Robert Abela’s announcement of a general election to be held on 30 May.

In a message shared on social media, Cachia reflected on her tenure, describing it as “the greatest honour and privilege,” and signing off with “Over and out!” while highlighting her historic achievement as Malta’s first woman to serve in the position.

Cachia was appointed Government Whip in January 2024, succeeding Andy Ellul. Her appointment marked a significant milestone in Maltese politics, as she became the first female to hold the role.

Elected to Parliament in 2022 on the Labour Party ticket, Cachia also previously served as president of the party’s youth wing, Forum Żgħażagħ Laburisti.
