MUT Calls For Better Security In Schools After School Stabbing

UPDATED WITH MINISTRY STATEMENT:
The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) has emphasised that it has been advocating for increased security in schools for several years.
This long-term effort led to the introduction of security personnel in State Schools in 2020, marking a significant step in safeguarding students, staff, and school premises.
The commitment to improving school safety was further reinforced with the signing of a new sectoral agreement in 2024, which included a provision for a review of security protocols in schools.
The MUT has now formally communicated with the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation to initiate this review. The process will evaluate the current security measures, assess existing security services, and explore additional protocols that could strengthen safety in schools.
According to the Union, any rapid or reactionary decisions will have little lasting impact, as genuine improvements require careful planning, consultation, and a long-term strategy.
In response to a recent incident at St Clare College, Pembroke Secondary School, the Ministry has appointed an Advisory Board to align initiatives with the ongoing implementation of the National Education Strategy 2024 to 2030.
The board will provide strategic and operational recommendations on a Behaviour Management Framework, ensuring alignment with national legislation, educational standards, and student and educator wellbeing.
Ms Ritienne Borg Saliba, Director General within the Ministry, chairs the board, which includes Professor Dr Anton Grech, Professor Saviour Formosa, Mr Chris Siegersma, Ms Elaine German, Ms Maria Camilleri, and Mr Ryan Portelli. This work is separate from the ongoing development of the Behaviour Management Framework.
