Museums By Candlelight Returns To Rabat & Mdina This September!
Heritage Malta's Museums by Candlelight series will return to Rabat and Mdina on Saturday 19 September, offering visitors the chance to explore three historic sites after dark in a unique atmosphere illuminated by thousands of candles.
Running from 7pm until midnight, the event will open the Domvs Romana, St Paul's Catacombs and the National Museum of Natural History for a reduced admission fee of €3.
Alongside evening access to the sites, visitors will be able to enjoy live music and entertainment inspired by Malta's history, art and cultural heritage.
At the Domvs Romana, visitors can discover the remains of an ancient Roman town house, including its well preserved mosaics and archaeological artefacts displayed in Malta's first purpose built archaeological museum, which opened in 1882. Harpist Laetitia and violinist Stephen Scerri will perform at the site between 8pm and 11pm.
St Paul's Catacombs, Malta's largest interconnected complex of underground Roman cemeteries, will also be open throughout the evening.
The site, which recently became the first in Malta to receive the European Heritage Label, preserves evidence of burial customs and religious traditions dating from the Punic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Live entertainment will be provided by Maltese band Skald.
Visitors to the National Museum of Natural History, housed inside the 18th century Vilhena Palace in Mdina, can view a range of exhibits including a mummified Nile crocodile, the skull of a false killer whale, a fossilised crocodilian head discovered in Gozo and a tooth from the extinct giant white shark. Kathy the Violinist will perform during the evening.
The event coincides with Rabat Sacrum, organised by the Rabat Local Council from 6pm, adding to the programme of activities taking place across both localities.
Tickets are available through Heritage Malta's online store and at the door, although advance booking is recommended. Heritage Malta members enter free of charge, but pre-booking is required. The event involves walking between the three venues, so comfortable clothing and footwear are recommended.
