MUMN Celebrates 30 Years Of Support For Nurses, Midwives & Healthcare Professionals

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg attended a celebration marking the 30th anniversary of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN), during which a museum dedicated to healthcare professionals was inaugurated at the union’s premises in Qormi.

The museum was blessed by Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna as part of the evening’s programme, which also saw the launch of a publication documenting MUMN’s three decades of work. Plans for a new monument recognising the contribution of nurses and midwives were also unveiled.

Borg praised the dedication of MUMN members and said the Government would continue investing in healthcare professionals to ensure they have the necessary conditions to provide quality care to patients.

He stressed that investments, reforms and infrastructure projects within the healthcare sector depend on having the right professionals to deliver services. He also referred to the recent signing of two collective agreements with MUMN, which will improve conditions and opportunities for around 180 employees.

Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Deo Debattista highlighted the important role nurses and midwives play in supporting patients and their families, encouraging young people to consider joining the profession.

MUMN President Paul Pace reflected on the union’s history, saying the new museum preserves the story of healthcare professionals in Malta. He noted that the profession has a long history, dating back to the time of the Knights, and said understanding the past is essential to appreciating the present.

The museum forms part of MUMN’s ongoing initiatives at its Qormi premises, which also host meetings, training sessions and educational activities. The union currently represents more than 5,500 members.
