MULTIPLE GOOD FRIDAY PROCESSIONS CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER

Several Good Friday processions across Malta and Gozo have been cancelled due to severe weather conditions, with strong winds and isolated showers forcing organisers to call off events just hours before they were due to begin.
A yellow weather warning issued for strong west-northwest winds and unstable conditions led to the cancellation of all processions in Gozo, including those in Nadur, Żebbuġ, Rabat, and Xagħra. Instead, prayers are being held inside parish churches.
In Malta, a number of major processions have also been called off, including those in Rabat, Żebbuġ, and Paola, with the latter moving its activities indoors. Organisers cited safety concerns for participants, as well as the risk of damage to statues and traditional vestments.
Meanwhile, a decision on the Mosta procession is expected after the afternoon liturgical service, with organisers monitoring weather conditions closely.
Good Friday processions are among Malta’s most cherished religious traditions, dating back to medieval times and drawing large crowds annually. However, this is not the first disruption caused by adverse weather, with similar cancellations occurring in recent years.
The impact of the conditions was also felt on Ħamis ix-Xirka, with several outdoor events cancelled, including the popular Puttinu Cares Night Walk.
