An apartment block in Swieqi has been ordered to cease operations after inspections by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) uncovered multiple breaches of licensing conditions following a police intervention on Sunday evening.

The inspections were triggered after police responded to reports of excessive noise coming from a block of apartments in Triq Cannataci. Officers arrived shortly afterwards and issued on-the-spot fines totalling around €2,000 to 12 young people for breaches of public order and the peace, as well as illegal littering.

During follow-up inspections, the MTA found that eight of the nine apartments in the block were operating in breach of their licence conditions. Tourists staying in the affected apartments were asked to leave and were relocated to alternative accommodation.

The authority also found the operator had failed to comply with applicable regulatory requirements. As a result, it issued an Enforcement Notice and ordered the immediate suspension of operations across the entire apartment block.

The building will remain closed until the operator satisfies all legal and regulatory obligations.

The police said they issued a total of 17 on-the-spot fines over the weekend as part of ongoing enforcement efforts aimed at maintaining public order and ensuring operators comply with the law.
