MTA Cracks Down On Illegal Short-Let Rentals with Three-Year Licence Ban

The Malta Tourism Authority (MTA) has stepped up its crackdown on unlicensed short-let accommodation, warning that properties found operating illegally will face a three-year ban on obtaining a licence.
Under revised accommodation regulations, any short-let property operating without the required licence will be prohibited from applying for one for three years.
The restriction applies to the property itself and is separate from any administrative penalties, fines or judicial proceedings that may also be pursued under Maltese law.
The move forms part of the MTA's ongoing efforts to strengthen regulation within the short-let sector and ensure operators comply with licensing requirements.
The authority has recently intensified inspections across the islands, taking enforcement action against properties found in breach of the regulations.
The MTA said the updated rules are intended to protect the integrity of Malta's tourism industry by promoting fair competition, safeguarding visitors and ensuring all accommodation providers meet the country's legal and regulatory standards.
