Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar has called for stricter pollution regulations following an incident in Qormi, where a black fume was seen rising from a factory, disturbing local residents.

Speaking on Facebook, Cutajar said many residents living near the factory’s chimney had raised concerns about the emissions. She noted that while the use of HFO (heavy fuel oil) is not illegal, its effects on public health and quality of life cannot be ignored.

HFO is a low-grade fuel often associated with higher emissions of pollutants.

Cutajar reported the matter to the Environmental Health Directorate, which she said acted promptly, and the Environment and Resources Authority was also notified. She added that the factory involved will take measures to reduce harmful emissions.

“This case, which is not unique, clearly demonstrates the need to update our laws to better reflect current environmental realities and protect public health,” Cutajar stated.
