Moviment Graffitti has come out against the Nationalist Party’s proposal for a joint Armed Forces of Malta and Malta Police Force task force to tackle ‘illegal’ migration.

‘This is a reflection of the current political trend to employ deportation and border enforcement methods, marketed as a ‘solution’ to control migration’, said Graffitti.

‘ICE-like violence, deportations, and pushback efforts are inhumane, racist, and fascist tactics’, they added.

‘Both PL and PN have employed them, or advocated for them, as a political tool, seemingly tackling ‘the immigration issue’ . We reject the normalisation of fascist and anti-migrant violence. We stand in solidarity with all migrants on the Maltese Islands.’

‘Raids, detention, and deportation disrupt human lives. Migrants who have made Malta their home are being uprooted because of racist policies. Migrant residents and refugees are harassed and deported, logistical and financial help is given to Libya for illegal pushbacks of migrants, and racist raids are committed on roads, buses, and in homes.’

The group said that the fixation on detention and deportation as migration control reveal the discriminatory nature of these tactics in a country where the economic model relies on migrant labour as modern day slavery.
