Is Malta becoming too small for its growing population? That's the question we asked our followers, and the results were overwhelmingly one-sided.

In a Malta Daily poll asking “Is Malta too small?”, 82% of respondents (644 votes) answered “Yes, definitely”, while 18% (141 votes) selected “Not at all”.

A total of 785 people participated, reflecting concerns about overcrowding, development and the country's future. However, the results represent our participating audience, not the Maltese population as a whole.

According to the National Statistics Office, Malta's population reached 588,254 by the end of 2025, with foreign nationals accounting for 31.1% of residents.

The recruitment of third-country nationals (TCNs) to address labour shortages has also become a major topic of political and public debate.

Meanwhile, ongoing construction, high-rise developments, increasing traffic and the loss of open spaces have raised questions about how much development Malta can sustain.

The government is also exploring land reclamation as a way to create additional space.

Earlier this month, a tender was issued to study a potential 100,000-square-metre reclamation project off Bengħajsa for industrial and maritime activities. The proposal remains at the planning and feasibility stage and forms part of wider discussions surrounding Malta Vision 2050.

While population growth and foreign workers contribute to economic activity, concerns persist over infrastructure, housing, environmental protection and quality of life.

The bigger question may be whether Malta's infrastructure and planning can keep pace with its growing population.

Do you think Malta has reached its limit, or is there still room to grow?
