The Kunsill Studenti Universitarji (KSU) just released a survey about University of Malta students’ positions regarding abortion.

The survey gathered a sample of 1140 students from a population of 12,400 university students, with 91% being local students 9% visiting students.

50% of respondents were aged between 17 and 20, with 446 students aged 21 to 25, and 123 aged over 25.

Asked whether abortion should be legalised in Malta, 57.5% respondents voted for yes, making it over half of respondents. 25.4% responded no, with 17.1% unsure.

On a scale of 0 to 4, with 4 being ‘strongly agree’, a majority of students (3.09) said that they agree with abortion if the mother’s life was in danger, followed by ‘pregnancy resulting from rape.’

In third place was child suffering from life threatening illness, with the lowest rate being ‘parents noting wanting the child regardless of other choices.’

Meanwhile, a majority of students think that there should be institutional support from the EU to prevent local unsafe abortion, regardless of the legal status in Malta.

80.9% of female students responded yes, with 70.7% of male students and 76% of non-binary students also voting yes.

11.1% of men voted no, along with 4.3% of female students and 12% of non-binary students.

This follows a recent European Commission ruling that EU member states may use existing EU funds to support access to safe abortion services.

It was ruled following a citizen’s campaign that managed to gather more than 1.1 million signatures.

Abortion in Malta still remains a hot topic, with the main two parties were either mainly silent or inconsistent due to the potential voter impact were it to be decriminalised or legalised.
