A recent Eurostat study has found that 58.2% of Malta’s population aged 15 and over travelled abroad in 2024.

The study defines tourism as a domestic or international overnight stay outside a person’s usual environment for leisure or other personal reasons.

Malta had one of the lowest averages of people travelling whilst the highest where the Netherlands with a whopping 83.6% of their population aged 15 and over enjoying a holiday.

At the opposite end of the scale, Romania recorded the lowest figure at just 27.7%.

Several other popular European destinations also recorded lower travel rates than Malta. In Italy, for example, only 38.7% of the population aged 15 and over travelled in 2024. Portugal and Greece also recorded percentages below Malta’s figure.

Across the European Union, the average stood at 65.4%, meaning Malta’s 58.2% was below the EU average but still relatively close to the overall figure.

With more people travelling following the pandemic and international tourism continuing to recover, it raises an interesting question: did more Maltese residents travel in 2025 and 2026?
