More Than €2.1 Million Investment for New Reservoir In Ta’ Milt

Work has started on a €2.1 million project to rebuild the reservoir at Ta’ Mlit in Mosta, aimed at reducing flooding in the area, increasing water storage capacity and creating a new recreational space for the community.

The project is being carried out by the Public Works Department and forms part of the Government’s commitments outlined in its Electoral Manifesto. It is among the initiatives being implemented during the first months of the current legislature.

The announcement was made during a visit by Minister for Local Government and Public Works Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with Director General of the Works Division within the Public Works Department Architect Stephen Bonello and Mosta Mayor Joseph Gatt.

Minister Zerafa Civelli said the project reflects the Government’s commitment to addressing the needs of residents and investing in areas where improvements are required.

“We are carrying out a project that directly responds to what residents in this area need: less flooding, stronger infrastructure and a new space where families can spend time together,” the Minister said.

She added that public investment should lead to practical improvements in people’s daily lives while providing communities with the infrastructure and spaces they need.

Director of Coastal and Stormwater within the Public Works Department Architect Mario Ellul explained that the reservoir will be rebuilt with a stronger structure due to existing structural problems, particularly affecting its roof. The new reservoir will also be excavated deeper to increase its storage capacity.

Mosta Mayor Joseph Gatt said the project will address an important challenge faced by residents while also providing an opportunity for environmental improvements and the creation of a new community space. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between the Government and the Local Council in delivering projects that provide sustainable benefits.

The existing reservoir will be demolished and replaced with a new structure featuring concrete columns and roofing. Once completed, it will have the capacity to store more than 4 million litres of water, which can be used to irrigate trees and plants in different areas, supporting more efficient water management.

The reconstruction works are expected to be completed within 60 weeks. Following this stage, Project Green will proceed with the construction of a garden above the reservoir, creating a new recreational area for residents.

The completed project is expected to contribute to reduced flooding, increased water storage capacity, environmental improvements and the creation of a new public space for families and the wider Mosta community.
