Between 2019 and 2024, Malta International Airport managed to reduce land waste by 20% despite a 23% increases in the number of passengers.

The company made a commitment to mining its environmental footprint. They introduced the collection of organic waste in 2021 which instantly reduced landfill waste by 9%, and a bonus-linked company-wide target that measures landfill waste per passenger was introduced.

Additionally, passengers were also encouraged to contribute by disposing of waste in the correct bins and bringing reusable bottles on their trips.

Reusable bottles can be filled from any of the three water fountains in Malta International Airport. It’s estimated that the implementation of these fountains has prevented the use of more than 741,000 disposable bottles from being used.

“We believe that responsible waste and resource management is driven by people as much as processes,” stated Justine Baldacchino, Head of Sustainability and Analytics at MIA.

“Given the thousands of people walking on airport grounds, encouraging more responsible behaviours is an important building block of our efforts to divert more waste from landfill and improve our overall practices,” she concluded.

Last week, MIA employees were also invited to attend an educational session organised in collaboration with WasteServ to discuss Malta’s various waste streams, the difference between household and commercial waste, and the significant environmental impact of daily choices.
