More Than 2 Million Passengers Travel Between Malta and Gozo in Three Months

Sea transport between Malta and Gozo recorded increases in passenger numbers, vehicle movements and trips during the second quarter of 2026 when compared with the same period in 2025.

Between April and June 2026, a total of 12,977 trips were operated, carrying 2,037,526 passengers. June was the busiest month, accounting for 4,646 trips or 35.8% of all trips during the quarter.

The Mġarr and Ċirkewwa route carried 1,640,258 passengers, representing an increase of 3.0% over the corresponding quarter of the previous year. April recorded the highest passenger figure, with 582,251 passengers or 35.5% of the quarterly total. Vehicle movements also increased by 2.0%, reaching 559,633. The route recorded 9,178 trips during the quarter, up by 2.8% compared with 2025, with May registering the highest number of trips at 3,125 or 34.0% of the total.

Passenger and vehicle traffic patterns varied throughout the week, with Sundays and Mondays seeing the highest vehicle traffic from Mġarr, while Fridays and Saturdays were busiest for vehicles departing Ċirkewwa.

Meanwhile, the Mġarr and Valletta service recorded 2,589 trips and 319,535 passengers. Compared with the previous year, trips declined by 4.7% and passengers by 4.8%.

Services connecting Mġarr with Sliema via Buġibba operated 605 trips on each route during the quarter. Passenger numbers were highest on the Sliema routes, with 25,430 passengers travelling from Sliema to Mġarr and 24,755 on the return route.
