MOMENTUM WELCOMES RETURN OF MANOEL ISLAND TO PUBLIC OWNERSHIP

Momentum has welcomed the Government’s decision to revert Manoel Island back to public ownership, following sustained public pressure. The organisation described the move as proof that citizen mobilisation and unified voices can bring about meaningful change.
Manoel Island has long symbolised the failure of successive administrations to prioritise the public good over private development. Momentum highlighted that its return to the public domain is a key step towards restoring trust and rebalancing national priorities.
The organisation called for a binding commitment to transform Manoel Island into a car-free national park and heritage space, fully accessible to the Maltese people, describing it as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a green and cultural landmark.
Momentum also drew attention to ongoing concerns in Mellieħa, particularly in the Ta’ Żnuber area, citing a lack of transparency, weak safeguards, and environmental pressures. The group urged immediate action, including stronger environmental protections, clear national planning, public consultation, and consistent enforcement.
Momentum member Carrmel Asciak stated: “While the Government's reversal on Manoel Island is a positive and necessary step, it should not have taken such sustained public pressure. Malta needs institutions that act proactively in the public interest. We stand with residents and activists advocating for responsible planning and environmental stewardship, starting with Mellieħa.”
The group pledged to remain vigilant to ensure that the lessons from Manoel Island are applied nationwide.
