Momentum has expressed serious concerns over the proposed arrival of the floating party platform marketed as “Noma Island,” joining local councils of Sliema, Mellieha , and Marsaxlokk in questioning the authorities’ ability to enforce maritime regulations.

Arnold Cassola, leader of Momentum, stressed that the lack of consistent enforcement during the summer months has allowed party boats to generate excessive noise, disrupt residents, and negatively impact coastal communities.

“The sea is a shared public space. It should not become an unregulated extension of the party industry at the expense of residents, coastal communities and the marine environment,” Cassola said.

The movement also highlighted the environmental consequences, warning that noise and light pollution disturb sensitive marine habitats and protected coastal areas, including Natura 2000 sites.

To address these concerns, Momentum called for a strengthened Environmental Protection Unit across Malta and Gozo, equipped with personnel, dinghies, drones, and cameras, operating 24 hours a day to ensure proper enforcement.

Momentum also insisted that no new licences for floating entertainment platforms should be issued until authorities can prove they can enforce existing regulations effectively.
