Momentum Unveils Three-Point Plan to Strengthen Malta’s Domestic Violence Response

Political party Momentum has announced three proposals aimed at overhauling Malta’s response to domestic violence, arguing that victims continue to face delays, inadequate protection, and a lack of safe accommodation despite years of political promises.

The party said domestic violence cases should be treated as emergencies from the moment they are reported, with immediate action taken to protect victims and their children.

Momentum argued that many families are still left exposed during the most critical stages after seeking help from authorities.

Among the proposals is the appointment of an additional judge dedicated exclusively to domestic violence cases, in a bid to reduce lengthy court delays and speed up protection orders.

The party said justice delivered too slowly risks placing victims in further danger.

Momentum also called for increased support for NGOs providing shelters and social-care services, including full government coverage of maintenance and refurbishment costs for accommodation facilities housing victims and their children.

Katya Compagno said the proposals represented “what protection actually looks like” and described the initiative as “a Bidla ta’ Vera”.
