Momentum Releases Statement Opposing High-Rise Development In Gozo

Momentum has voiced strong concern over a new planning application proposing a development of up to twelve storeys on the Calypso Hotel site in Marsalforn.
The project would include more than 140 apartments, a four-star hotel and commercial outlets, which the party warns would further undermine Gozo’s landscape and traditional skyline.
Executive member Dr Matthew Agius cautioned that large-scale developments are no longer hypothetical, stating, “High-rise buildings in Gozo are no longer a distant threat. They have already become a reality following large-scale developments in Xlendi and the overdevelopment of Marsalforn.”
“This latest proposal signals a dangerous precedent, opening the door to even taller buildings in one of Gozo’s densely developed coastal areas,” he continued.
Momentum criticised both major political parties, arguing that their acceptance of high-rise development leaves Gozitans without effective representation.
The party reiterated its outright opposition to such projects, warning that Gozo is rapidly losing its distinct character.
Dr Agius also highlighted the absence of a comprehensive capacity study, saying, “Crucially, no comprehensive capacity assessment has ever been carried out to determine how much development Gozo can realistically sustain.”
Momentum is calling for an immediate halt to high-rise proposals, a Gozo-specific height policy, and a transparent island-wide carrying capacity assessment before further permits are approved.
