Momentum Question PL’s Animal Welfare Commitment After Montekristo Zoo Licence Renewal

Partit Momentum has questioned the government's commitment to animal welfare after Montekristo Estate was granted a zoo licence, despite its controversial history.
Momentum executive member Katya Compagno said the decision appeared to contradict Labour's 2026 electoral manifesto, which promised that no new zoo licences would be issued to facilities keeping dangerous animals, and that such animals would gradually disappear from Malta's zoos.
The party also raised concerns about animal welfare due to the conviction of Montekristo’s operator in 2021 for operating an illegal zoo and causing unnecessary animal suffering.
Compagno called on the government to explain how the licence decision aligns with its manifesto promises, and questioned whether its animal welfare commitments were genuine or simply election campaign slogans.
