The Momentum Party have responded to the Prime Minister's statement regarding Manoel Island being turned into a National Park.

In a press release, they questioned why a padel ground is being constructed on the old Gżira football grounds.

“The old Gżira football grounds formed part of the wider MIDI development plans for Manoel Island, which included residential development." stated Dr Matthew Agius, an executive member of Momentum.

"Now that the Government has its intention to take over the project and transform the island into a national park, it is reasonable to expect that this area would form part of the open green space promised to the public. Instead, the site appears to be rapidly transformed into a new commercial sports facility,” he concluded.

Momentum have called for clarification from the Maltese government regarding who authorised the construction of the alleged padel courts, and how their construction fits into the plans for the future national park.

Momentum also raised concerns about the traffic, light pollution and noise which this sports facility may bring.

"Manoel Island represents one of the last opportunities to create a large open green space in one of the most densely built parts of Malta," they shared in their statement, "Decisions taken today will shape the site for generations."
