Momentum Demands Full Transparency On Marsaskala Project With Freedom of Information Request

Momentum has submitted a formal Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works amid what it describes as a “serious lack of transparency” surrounding the proposed regeneration of Marsaskala.

The party said it was compelled to take this step following the government’s continued refusal to publish detailed information about a project that is expected to have a significant impact on both residents and the environmental wellbeing of the bay. Although publicly promoted as a promenade “beautification” initiative, the plans reportedly include the introduction of a fast ferry terminal along with the extensive infrastructure such a service requires.

Through the FOI request, Momentum is seeking access to a number of documents, studies, and technical plans. The party insists that residents have a right to understand the full scope of what is being proposed before any irreversible decisions are taken.“The secrecy the government is maintaining over this project is unacceptable,” Momentum representative Mark Camilleri Gambin said. “Pushing forward a major infrastructure project in the heart of a residential bay, without publishing environmental, social, and traffic impact studies, is irresponsible. Marsaskala residents deserve facts not PR or public consultations that are merely a box-ticking exercise. If studies exist, they should be released immediately. If they do not, the project should be halted.”

Momentum said it expects the Ministry to honour its obligations under the Freedom of Information Act and to provide the requested information within the legally established timeframe, insisting that transparency is a fundamental right of citizens.
