Momentum Calls For Removal Of Illegal Structures Occupying Sliema Public Space

Momentum has formally called on Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici and the Lands Authority Board of Governors to take immediate action over what it described as the illegal occupation of public pavements and roads at Ix-Xatt Tas-Sliema.

In a letter addressed to the authorities, the political movement highlighted structures placed in front of the Centric Hotel and Piccolo Padre, arguing that public space has been taken over for private commercial use. Momentum said a large structure has been erected directly on the pavement and part of the road to accommodate tables and chairs, describing the situation as an example of the wider challenges facing public spaces in urban areas.

The movement said the issue extends beyond this specific location, claiming that pavements across Sliema and St Julian’s are increasingly being occupied by commercial activity. It argued that areas intended for pedestrians are becoming difficult to navigate due to tables, chairs, planters and other commercial items, creating challenges particularly for elderly people, wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs.

“Public land is not a free-for-all for anyone with the means to seize it,” said Momentum Leader Arnold Cassola. He argued that the Lands Authority has a responsibility to protect shared spaces and ensure that public areas remain accessible to everyone.

Momentum questioned the role of the Lands Authority if it does not intervene in cases where it believes public land is being used unlawfully. The movement said public spaces should serve the wider community rather than being occupied for private commercial benefit.

It called for swift action from Minister Bonnici and the Lands Authority Board of Governors to address the situation and remove what it described as illegal structures, rather than allowing further delays.
