Momentum has welcomed the government’s decision to save the historic British-era barracks at Fort Chambray in Gozo from demolition, but is calling for the building to receive Grade 1 scheduling.

The party said the barracks’ inclusion in the amended masterplan for the fort’s restoration was a positive step towards safeguarding Gozo’s architectural heritage. However, it said it remained unclear whether the building would receive Grade 1 or Grade 2 protection.

Momentum spokesperson Dr Matthew Agius said the barracks remained in remarkably good condition and retained much of their original character. He warned that protecting only the façade while allowing substantial internal modifications would not adequately safeguard the building’s historical value.

Grade 1 scheduling would provide the highest level of protection, preserving the building’s historic structure, interiors and architectural features. Grade 2 protection, meanwhile, allows internal modifications while safeguarding the main architectural features.

Momentum reiterated its call for immediate Grade 1 scheduling, as advocated by Europa Nostra and supported by local heritage organisations.

The party also recalled its proposal to transform undeveloped and unrestored sections of Fort Chambray into a national park, offering public access to the site and creating opportunities for cultural activities, education, green space and sustainable tourism.

Momentum said the fort should be restored in the public interest, particularly as Victoria prepares to become European Capital of Culture in 2031. It called on the government to confirm that its commitment to saving the barracks would include full protection of their historic fabric and interiors.
