Momentum Backs Marsaxlokk Council In Opposition to Labour Manifesto Plans

Momentum has voiced strong support for the Marsaxlokk Local Council after the council publicly opposed two proposals outlined in Labour’s electoral manifesto, describing the council’s stance as “pro-resident” and necessary to protect the community’s interests.
The dispute centres on a residential plot which they claimed is already earmarked by the council for a public garden and jogging track under an existing Planning Authority permit.
Labour’s manifesto, however, proposes transforming the site into a multi-storey complex featuring a fish hatchery and research facilities, stated the council.
The council has insisted the land should remain open green space for residents.
The council has also demanded clarification over plans linked to the regeneration of the Marsa industrial zone, amid concerns that industrial operations could be relocated to Marsaxlokk’s coastline.
Momentum said residents should not become “the overflow for problems the State has refused to plan for.”
Drawing parallels with ongoing disputes in Pembroke, the party reiterated its call for stronger local council autonomy, mandatory community consultation, and constitutional protections preventing the commercial sale of public land.
Mark Philip Camilleri Gambin, Momentum candidate for the 3rd and 11th districts, said the situation showed that “residents come last under the duopoly,” adding that Momentum’s priority remains “residents first, public land protected, real consultation before any plan is signed.”
