On a site larger than a football pitch, the Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness is transforming a former quarry into a vibrant green space for the local community. Mitħna Park, located along Triq l-Imqabba, will cover approximately 7,400 square metres in the area known as Tal-Mitħna.

The project, carried out by Project Green in consultation with the Mqabba and Qrendi Local Councils, represents an investment of €2 million, supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli, alongside Minister for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi, announced the works during a visit to the site. The park’s design aims to bring visitors closer to nature, particularly children, through features such as a ‘bug and bee hotel’ and natural play areas.

Perit Beverley Costa, Chief Operations Officer at Project Green, explained that green roof canopies will collect rainwater for irrigation. The park will also include a reservoir, an amphitheatre, and a ping pong table, with more than 100 trees and around 500 shrubs to be planted.

Minister Dalli said, “For many years, residents in this area have known this site as ‘the quarry area’. Through this project, we will be introducing a beautiful open space for the residents, just a few minutes’ walk away for hundreds of families.”

Minister Zrinzo Azzopardi highlighted how the project demonstrates the effective use of European funds to create more green spaces in local communities. “Through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, the Government is investing in sites across Malta to enhance the natural environment and improve access to quality green spaces. European funding is not just about plans on paper; it brings tangible, visible benefits for our families and communities,” he said.

Andrea Saliba, Project Manager for Mitħna Park, added, “At Project Green, we understand the contribution of the environment and how nature serves as a source of peace. One of our goals is to provide open and safe spaces where the public can spend quiet and relaxing time.”
