Misraħ il-Karmelitani Garden in Żurrieq, an open space of around 1,150 square metres on a site previously covered in tarmac, was inaugurated by the Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, together with the Project Green team and Żurrieq Mayor Rita Grima.

The project has transformed a formerly paved area into an accessible green space within a residential neighbourhood.

As part of the works, a rainwater reservoir was excavated to collect runoff from the surrounding road. This water will be used to irrigate indigenous trees and shrubs planted across the garden.

Solar lighting has been installed, along with benches and other amenities, creating a recreational space for the community.

A Maltese luzzu belonging to the late Gianni “il-Lixxu” Tonna has also been placed within the garden. The boat was restored and donated to the Local Council in his memory, with its installation coordinated by the Mayor together with Joseph Farrugia, known as “it-Timba”, who assisted with transport and preparation.

In total, 40 mature trees and 1,620 shrubs have been planted, improving biodiversity and the local environment.

Minister Miriam Dalli said the project is another example of ongoing efforts to create more open and accessible spaces, improving quality of life by providing areas where families, residents and children can meet, relax and spend time outdoors.

She added that the design reflects a more sustainable approach to urban planning through rainwater harvesting, solar lighting and indigenous planting.

Project architect Daniel Tabone noted that the garden also includes a dedicated area for yoga and exercise, supporting healthier lifestyles.

The project is one of 16 initiatives delivered through the Project Green Community Greening Grant scheme.
