Minister for the Environment, Energy and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli has announced a significant milestone in the Malta–Sicily Interconnector 2 project, confirming further progress in strengthening Malta’s energy security.

In a Facebook post, the Minister said that another important step has been taken in reinforcing the country’s electricity infrastructure, highlighting that the second interconnector cable has now been manufactured in the United States.

The development follows the completion of manufacturing, testing, and preparation for installation of a 103km subsea cable, marking a key stage in the project aimed at improving Malta’s connection to the European energy grid.

The high-voltage cable was produced over a year-long process involving multiple stages, including fibre optic production, copper conductor formation, insulation, assembly, and extensive factory testing to ensure reliability and performance. It was manufactured in 10km sections before being joined into two main lengths and prepared for deployment.

Following testing, the cable has been spooled onto a dedicated carousel ahead of loading onto the cable-laying vessel Nexans Electra, which will carry out installation works in the coming months. Marine route clearance has also been completed, paving the way for safe subsea operations.

The €300 million project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and is classified as an Operation of Strategic Importance. Once completed, it is expected to enhance energy security, support renewable integration, and contribute to Malta’s long-term sustainability goals.
