Energy Minister Miriam Dalli has highlighted Malta’s progress in renewable energy during the 16th session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency. She noted that Malta tripled its share of renewable energy in 2024, recording one of the most significant year on year increases among European Union member states.

Addressing delegates, Minister Dalli outlined how Malta is advancing policy, infrastructure and innovation to support the energy transition. She explained that efforts are focused on expanding renewable energy generation, strengthening interconnectivity and upgrading the national electricity network to improve resilience and efficiency.

She referred to Malta’s National Policy on Offshore Renewables, which designates marine zones for offshore wind and solar projects and introduces measures to attract investment. Malta is also working towards developing its first deep water offshore wind farm beyond 12 nautical miles, with a planned capacity of up to 320 megawatts.

The minister said investment is continuing in large scale battery energy storage systems and grid upgrades to manage intermittency and allow a higher share of renewables. The planned second interconnector is expected to double Malta’s energy capacity with the European Union and improve grid stability.

Looking ahead, Malta aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 41 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030 and raise renewable energy to around 25 per cent. Minister Dalli also highlighted regional cooperation through the MED9 conference, which brought together Mediterranean EU member states to support the development of a green energy hub.
