Ministers & Politicians Speak Out In Support Of Paola Mayor Jason Silvio

Following the news that Paola Mayor Jason Silvio has had his personal bank accounts frozen in a planning dispute with an unnamed building developer, several of Malta’s Members of Parliament have spoken out with messages of support.
Prime Minister Robert Abela was quick to share his solidarity, confirming on social media that he had offered Silvio full legal protection during his upcoming proceedings.
The Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Employment, Jonathan Attard, and the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, released a joint statement saying that the developer’s actions were “unacceptable in a democratic society.”
Similar sentiments were shared by the Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, the Minister for Sustainable Mobility, Chris Bonett, and the Minister for Accommodation and Lands, Owen Bonnici.
Outside the Labour Party, Partit Momentum have also put out a statement on the topic, stating that it is mayor’s duty to appeal a permit and safeguard their communities. Party Leader Arnold Cassola said “The Mayor of Paola did what every mayor should do, he defended his locality”. As a result, the Party has called on the government to improve legal protections for mayors and councillors.
