Minister To Propose Amendment On Possession & Use Of Phones In Prison

Two people currently serving prison sentences are being investigated by the Police after mobile phones were found inside their cells during an investigative operation.
In a video message, Minister Glenn Bedingfield said that whilst in conversations with legal teams, he was made aware that the possession and use of phones in prison is not a crime.
It breaks the procedures and rules of the prison, but it is not considered a crime, said the Minister. He now hopes to propose the necessary amendments to change this.
He has also discussed how to better improve security services in Corradino, with discussions leading to agreements about the needed establishment of a ‘professional standards unit’ in prison.
Searches carried out inside the prisoners’ cells led to the discovery of two mobile phones. Another phone was also found inside the cell of a different prisoner.
