Minister Glenn Bedingfield Pays Visit To Swieqi & Pembroke Community Policing

During a visit to the Swieqi and Pembroke Community Policing Station, Minister for Home Affairs and Security Glenn Bedingfield said that public order and community wellbeing must remain protected.
Dedicated night patrols have therefore been introduced in the area.
Community Policing was launched in Mellieħa in 2019 as part of the Malta Police Force reform. Swieqi and Pembroke adopted the model in 2020, strengthening relationships between officers and residents.
The service now operates in every town and village across Malta and Gozo.
Growing tourism has created additional challenges in Swieqi and Pembroke, particularly between May and September.
Since the start of summer, Community Police officers have conducted overnight patrols, covering the locality and focusing on recognised hotspot areas.
Residents can contact the team through its Facebook page and WhatsApp channel to report concerns directly.
Minister Bedingfield thanked officers for their commitment, noting that direct communication enables quicker responses to reports.
Community Policing is based on officers knowing residents and understanding local needs. Around 170 Community Police officers serve Malta and Gozo, holding quarterly meetings with residents to discuss priorities.
Their work includes maintaining order, preventing crime, improving communication and raising awareness of safety issues. New recruits joining in July will further strengthen the service nationwide.
