Minister Clifton Grima Meets Venice Commission To Strengthen Role Of Specialised Tribunal Committees

The Maltese Government has taken another step towards strengthening the independence of specialised tribunals by advancing long-planned judicial reforms.
Clifton Grima, Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation, met with a delegation from the Venice Commission in Malta, after the Government requested expert advice on the proposed changes.
“We’ve already begun to implement the electoral manifesto,” stated Minister Grima as he explained that delegates from the Venice Commission, along with the Maltese government, discussed the role of specialised tribunal committees.
During the meeting, Grima thanked the Commission for accepting Malta's request and travelling to the country to discuss the reform. He said the Government was turning its commitment into concrete action by reviewing the current system, preparing draft legislation and delivering on a pledge made in its electoral manifesto.
The proposed reforms aim to ensure specialised tribunals continue providing expert services to the public while operating under stronger safeguards that reinforce their independence.
The meeting was described as positive and constructive, with the Ministry for Justice, Research and Innovation expressing its intention to continue cooperating closely with the Venice Commission as work on the reforms progresses.
