Minister Chris Fearne Warns Of Middle East Escalation Impacting Mediterranean Trade

Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Minister Chris Fearne has expressed Malta’s concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its expansion into the Arabian Gulf, warning of potential consequences for maritime security, international trade and the Maltese and wider Mediterranean economies.
Speaking during the Foreign Affairs Council in Luxembourg, Fearne highlighted disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and threats to commercial routes in the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
A significant proportion of trade arriving in the Mediterranean from Asia passes through the Suez Canal, meaning any disruption could directly affect Malta’s trade and economy, Fearne said. He stressed that keeping these routes open and safe is in Malta’s interest.
Malta also expressed support for the EU High Representative’s call to strengthen naval protection for commercial vessels in the Red Sea. Fearne said Malta’s neutrality does not prevent it from protecting its maritime and economic interests, while continuing to support diplomatic efforts to ease regional tensions.
On Palestine, Fearne reiterated Malta’s support for a two-state solution and raised concerns over settler violence, the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and the lack of progress on the Gaza peace plan. He also called for Palestinian elections to take place as soon as possible, without unnecessary delays.
Regarding Ukraine, Fearne welcomed discussions on a possible ceasefire, particularly with winter approaching.
During the meetings, he also emphasised solidarity and equality among EU member states and reaffirmed Malta’s support for EU enlargement, including the European integration of Montenegro and Albania.
