Transport Minister Chris Bonett announced in a video on social media that 297 Y-plate drivers have been stopped from operating after being found without the required licences to work in the sector.

Bonett explained that over the past year the Ministry for Transport has been working closely with Y-plate platforms and service providers to strengthen regulation within the industry, with the first phase of wider reforms expected to be introduced soon.

According to the minister, the drivers who were stopped, most of whom were foreign nationals, were identified during checks carried out over the past month. Authorities found that they either lacked the necessary licences or were not authorised to operate within the Y-plate sector.

Bonett emphasised that while the government remains committed to protecting workers, it is essential that the system is not abused. He stated that enforcement measures are necessary to ensure that those operating in the sector follow the rules and meet all legal requirements.
