Minister Byron Camilleri Meets European Commissioner For Home Affairs And Immigration Magnus Brunner

Byron Camilleri, Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment, recently met with Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration.
During a visit to the Armed Forces of Malta’s Maritime Squadron, Camilleri invited Brunner aboard the P71 offshore patrol vessel before hosting a bilateral meeting.
Byron Camilleri highlighted Malta’s progress when it comes to managing irregular migration, emphasising how in the past 5 years, Malta has seen a register 93% decrease in the number of irregular arrivals. Additionally, the ratio of returns increased to 75%. Camilleri attributed these successes to to the Government’s sustained investment in prevention and returns.
He emphasised Malta’s ongoing implementation of the European Pact on Migration and Asylum and the importance of an effective solidarity mechanism. The Minister also underlined Malta’s continued investment in external border management, strategic partnerships with countries along migration routes, and the vital support provided by Frontex.
Commissioner Brunner described Malta as a strong and consistent voice within the Council, expressing his appreciation for Minister Camilleri’s efforts against migration challenges.
“We must act swiftly to reach an agreement in the Council,” stated Brunner in relation to the proposed Return Regulation, “Time is of the essence.”
