European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has received Nadia Murad, the Yazidi human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, at the European Parliament, in a meeting that reaffirmed the institution’s firm commitment to the defence of human rights.

Murad, a survivor of the 2014 Yazidi genocide carried out by ISIS in Iraq, has spent the past decade turning her personal trauma into sustained international advocacy for justice and accountability.

Her work focuses on the protection of victims of sexual violence in conflict and the pursuit of legal recognition for crimes committed against the Yazidi community.

In 2016, the European Parliament awarded Murad and fellow survivor Lamiya Aji Bashar the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in recognition of their courage.

She was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 and currently serves as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

Reflecting on the meeting, President Metsola said: “Nadia Murad’s journey from survivor to a leading voice for justice is a testament to the power of breaking the silence. Her courage isn’t just inspiring. It’s a call to action for us all.”

Metsola also underlined the continued relevance of Murad’s message to Europe, recalling her address to the Parliament when she received the Sakharov Prize.

“Europe is a symbol of humanity, and must remain a model for the world and for the coexistence of peoples and cultures,” Murad had said.
