Metsola Meets Canadian PM Mark Carney To Strengthen EU-Canada Ties

Addressing the European Political Community (EPC) Summit in Yerevan today, the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, underlined the urgent need for deeper integration with global allies to safeguard democratic values in an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape.
A central theme of the summit is the growing danger of foreign interference. President Metsola warned that disinformation and hybrid warfare are no longer “remote risks” but active tools used to destabilise the digital sphere and target the most vulnerable.
“The European Parliament is particularly committed to working with stakeholders to make sure these are stamped out because they are a real threat to democracy.”
She also addressed the role of technology, calling for social media platforms to act as partners in preventing the abuse of their tools by “malign democracies.”
On artificial intelligence, she urged leaders to move beyond hesitation and utilise AI as a shield for democratic processes. President Metsola issued a call for action, stating, “I listed the problems. We know how to solve it. We now need the political will to address it, and I am sure that we will find that political will today.”
She further highlighted the importance of the EPC as a vital platform for dialogue, bringing together leaders from across the continent, including the United Kingdom and, for the first time, Canada, to strengthen political coordination and address shared security and stability challenges outside the formal EU framework.
Highlighting transatlantic cooperation, President Metsola also met Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Following their bilateral meeting, she signalled a renewed push for alignment with like-minded partners, noting discussions on defence, trade and artificial intelligence, and expressing confidence in continued cooperation in the months ahead.
